Where it was filmed 'Catch-22'

The main location of the series and departure point for the aviators’ missions is the decommissioned airport of Olbia-Venafiorita, which stands in for the American airbase of Pianosa. The camp was dressed with hangars, control towers and military tents, and enlivened by a thoroughfare of military jeeps and lorries, American fighter planes and even a spectacular night-time bombing raid. The interiors of the planes in the scenes where the aviators bomb enemy strongholds from above used flight simulators and special effects and were built at Cinecittà Studios.

Amidst missions, exercises, meals at the mess and hospital visits, there is also time for swimming in the sea: the chosen location being Funtanaccia, in Capo Testa, a promontory in Northern Sardinia with little beaches and large granite rocks eroded by wind and salt air, not far from Santa Teresa di Gallura. Another destination, close to Olbia, is Capo Ceraso, a promontory rising between the city and the island of Tavolara whose rocks and Mediterranean undergrowth are guarded from above by fighter planes.

The young soldiers spend their leave in a brothel in Rome: the historical centre of Viterbo, main city in the Tuscia area, served for the exteriors of Rome in 1944, in particular the porticos of Piazza del Plebiscito whose glass windows, glass factory, wine and pawn shops were all dressed with signs from the era.

The little squares of Sutri (VT) were used for Bologna which the Americans are sure they have liberated despite the fact that the hooked enemy flag is still flying from the balcony of the Nazi headquarters. The Piazza del Comune, dominated by a fountain, served as the setting for scenes in Palermo where the mess officer, due to his syndicate traffic, is welcomed as an honoured guest.
