Description

Petrella Tifernina (CB) is supposed that it had already erected in the IV Century B. C. as an outpost of the Samnites. The ancient village rose up in the locality of Piano della Vicenna, out of the hill where the present medieval village was born. This village was called Tifernum by the Romans, due to its proximity to the Biferno river, in fact in 1862 "Tifernina" was added to the name of Petrella, to avoid cases of homonymy with other municipalities.

Among the monuments we mention the church dedicated to San Giorgio Martire (XII century), which was built in Romanesque art and declared a national monument in 1901. The main portal and the two side ones present an important sculptural decorative apparatus, while the interior is divided into three naves closed by apses.
