The Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo, in Montescaglioso (MT), dates back to around the middle of the 11th century, when the Benedictine monastic communities replaced the religious communities of Greek origin in many settlements. In the late Middle Ages it fell into disgrace, so much so that it had to be rebuilt at the end of the 15th century. The central nucleus of the abbey consists of the eastern cloister and the church, rebuilt by the Benedictine Congregation of Santa Giustina da Padova.
Over the centuries the monks' intervention has gradually added new constructive elements to the original construction: a beautiful colonnade, several new factories and wonderful frescoed cycles painted by the greatest artists of Basilicata. In 1784, with the abandonment by the monks, who moved to Lecce, the abbey lost part of its works of art, the library and the archive. In the early 19th century the monastery became the property of the Municipality.
