Located several kilometres from the sea, on the ancient road linking Bari and Brindisi, the Egnazia Archaeological Park safeguards many artefacts from the ancient city of Gnathia, near Fasano. The first excavations here began in the early 19th century when French officers plundered the site. Later, during the historic famine of 1846, the town’s inhabitants looted the ancient tombs of vases, precious objects, and grave goods to sell. It wasn’t until 1912 that systematic excavation work began. This continued intermittently in the 1940s, 1960s 1980s, and is on-going today. Near the site, outside the walls, is an Archaeological Museum.
