Petraio is an area of Naples that links the Vomero hill with Corso Vittorio Emanuele in a series of characteristic ramps. Descending the steps it is possible to glimpse views of the sea in several points.
The area began as a stream bed which gathered the rainfall that ran down from the Vomero hill to the Chiaia neighbourhood. Over time this rural area was urbanized and the steps, once surrounded by the ruins of shepherds huts in the 1500s, were expanded: by the end of the 1800s, the area was filled with wealthy villas in Art Deco style.
