The oldest neighbourhood in the municipality of Muro Lucano (PZ), Borgo Pianello perfectly represents the name given to the town, “the nativity scene”, with houses set into the slopes of the hill that form an amphitheatre which is perfectly lit up in the evening.
The village centre is linked to the hamlet of Capodigiano by a bridge built in 1918, one of the first in Southern Italy to be constructed in reinforced concrete. Borgo Pianello is the location of the birthplace, now a chapel, of St. Gerardo Maiella, patron saint of the region of Basilicata and protector of pregnant women and children.
