Pantano della Zittola, in the municipality of Montenero Val Cocchiara (IS), is part of a wetlands system in upper Molise. Formed by rainwater and underground springs which flood 440 hectares of swamp from October to May, it presents as a wide plain surrounded by mountainous ranges crossed by streams and small lakes of rainwater.
The area is used for the production of forage and grazing for livestock and horses: numerous wild horses pasture there freely (the local breed is the Pentro horse). In the morning the sun rises behind the mountains, illuminating the setting with rays of incomparable beauty, bringing life to a place lost in time, where nature has conserved a pure and pristine ecosystem that creates settings where animals live serenely, in harmony with humans and their surroundings, far from urban contexts.
