Palazzo Mirto is an ancient noble residence in the heart of Palermo. For 4 centuries, it was the residence of the noble Filangeri family who came to Sicily with the Normans.
The building today is the result of a series of transformations that have taken place over the centuries: originally 17thcentury, the building was heavily modified in 1793 when the entire first floor was recreated and the façade on via Lungarini and portal on via Merlo were built. Further modifications took place during the 19th century.
The complex includes the ground floor and two upper stories and originally hosted stables, kitchens and various rooms named for a theme or colour. On the first floor, the most striking are the Pink room, Chinese room and hall of Tapestries which leads directly to the most sumptuous room in the villa: the Baldachin hall. The walls are entirely covered with embroidered panels, a baldachin with a large tapestry in the centre acting as the backdrop to the throne where the prince would sit during official receptions. It overlooks a terrace where a pretty Baroque fountain, featuring a small, manmade cave of spongy rock decorated with seashells, is flanked by two aviaries. On the second floor are the private rooms dedicated to family life: the dining room with wooden ceiling, the parlour and two libraries with antique books from various time periods.
