Description

The Charterhouse of Trisulti is located in the Selva d'Ecio, in the village of Collepardo (province of Frosinone), on the slopes of mount Rotonaria and the Ernici range. Commissioned by Pope Innocent III, the original structure was built in 1204 around the Church of St. Bartholomew consecrated in 1211. Enclosed within a perimeter wall, the complex has been extended and modified several times over the centuries and displays mostly Baroque touches today. It is accessed through a large portal crowned with a bust of St. Bartholomew by Jacopo Lo Duca, a pupil of Michelangelo.
In the main space or courtyard is an 18th century fountain and the ancient Romanesque-Gothic guest house, known as the palace of Innocent III, with portico and terrace which houses the 36,000 volumes of the National Library of the Certosa.
The heart of the complex is the Baroque Church of St. Bartholomew which conserves two priceless wooden choir stalls made by Carthusian masters flanking the nave. The wall paintings and frescoes depicting the glories of the saints are dominated by Filippo Balbi’s representation of the Carthusian Martyrs of London, painted around 1863.
The 18th century pharmacy, at the heart of monastic life producing medication and liquors until the modern day, has preserved its 19th century furnishings with glass cabinets and cupboards containing bottles and boxes of herbs.
The medicinal herbs used by the monks still grow in the Italian garden, decorated with animal shapes, facing the pharmacy entrance.
