Where it was filmed 'More Than a Miracle'

This Neapolitan fairy-tale, directed by Francesco Rosi, is set in the Kingdom of Naples, ruled by Prince Rodrigo, and was filmed mainly in Apulia and Lazio. More specifically, the town beautiful commoner Isabella lives in was reconstructed on the Tavoliere delle Puglie plainand in Gravina in Puglia (BA). Several scenes of local life were instead shot in the piazza and streets of Bracciano and the town of Rota, both of which are located in the province of Rome. Between Rome and Viterbo are the Waterfalls of Monte Gelato, which are often used as a film set, and feature here in the scene in which the barrel Isabella has been trapped in is left at the mercy of the River Treja, which lends its name to the surrounding valley.

 

The interiors of the elegant palace of the prince were instead shot at the Padula Charterhouse in the province of Salerno, one of the biggest and most majestic monumental complexes in southern Italy.

Plot

Based on Giovan Battista Basile’s collection of novellas Lo cunto de li cunti, Spanish prince Rodrigo falls in love with beautiful commoner Isabella. Their reciprocal love is however put to the test by strange prophecies, sorcery and hijinks.
