The story is set in Ostuni (BR) and it starts in an alleyway of the “White City”, drenched in a torrential rainstorm, not far from the Romanesque-Gothic Cathedral that can be seen several frames later. The scene that follows used Piazza Carducci, in the heart of San Vito dei Normanni (BR), as Ostuni with the village’s ancient bar, the Bar Gallo, standing in for Michele’s fictional Bar Santos. The film returns several times to the scenic route of Ostuni.
A huge win on the ‘Superenalotto’ Lottery which coincides with the disappearance of Nunziante, former footballer and keeper of the winning ticket, takes his four friends up through the boot of Italy as they search for him: Polignano, San Benedetto del Tronto, Santuario della Madonna di Loreto, Venice and, eventually, Milan, where they find him in an area near the Duomo.
Not all these places were actually used as locations: Polignano is only mentioned (and images referring to the town in Puglia are all interiors); San Benedetto del Tronto was “played” by the portocanale di Senigallia, the seaside walk of Marina di Montemarciano, Falconara and Camerano, all municipalities in the province of Ancona; while the postcard that Mario writes to his family shows the “Passetto”, the Monument to the Fallen in Ancona. The Sanctuary of Loreto, where Teresa goes in pilgrimage and where a big fight takes place, is actually the Duomo of Orvieto.
Several of the scenes set at sea were shot in the marine oasis of Torre Guaceto (BR).
Football is a narrative thread throughout the film and one that reinforces friendships, the closing impactful scene takes place in San Siro Stadium, empty for the occasion it is even more poignant.

Five broke friends in Ostuni can’t believe their luck when they finally win a huge amount of money on the ‘Superenalotto’ Lottery. However, they can’t find the winning ticket nor the person who was looking after it. The remaining four search for him across Italy.
