The Splitzes are celebrating the honeymoon they never had in Europe and land in Malaga, actually the airport of Milano Malpensa. The production preferred to use Santa Margherita Ligure (GE) instead of Spain and its harbour provides the setting for the yacht during the critical scenes of the film. The molo foraneo and Piazzale Cagni were actually inserted into the Spanish city of Cartagena.
The most thrilling part of the film was set and shot on Lake Como. The mystery surrounding the assassin’s identity thickens when yet another murder forces Nick into a chase on foot near via Vittorio Emanuele and the area surrounding the Museo Giovio in piazza Medaglie d’Oro, here dressed as a market, in the heart of Como. The setting for the final countdown is Villa Erba, in Cernobbio. Nick and Audrey race quickly up the magnificent staircase and into one of the rooms with frescoed ceilings. On the terrace of Villa Erba, its lake and garden in the background, they mistakenly believe they have solved the case.
Following the murderer’s identification, a breath-taking chase between a Ferrari and an Alfa Romeo belonging to the Carabinieri takes place, involving various villages on the “Regina” state road and the “Vecchia Regina” provincial 71 road, between Carate and Moltrasio, Argegno and Laglio. The chase ends with the Alfa crashing into a (fake) statue between the Monument to the Fallen and Tempio Voltiano, a science museum on Lungolario Marconi in Como.
Milan also plays its part providing, among other places, via Spallanzani (Porta Venezia area) and the central station.
