Wedding celebrations are underway in a historical building with an inside courtyard, in Via delle Lega Lombarda, Nomentano neighbourhood, Rome. The structure of roof terraces linking the homes together makes Arturo and Alessandro and their neighbours into a united and supportive community. At the heart of the story is the Goddess Fortune, whom little Martina names for the first time during a picnic in the park of Villa Pamphili. The statue stands in the Sanctuary of Fortuna Primigenia outside the National Archaeology Museum in Palestrina (housed in Palazzo Colonna-Barberini), structured as a series of artificial terraces linked by ramps and staircases. In the cavea on the sixth and top terrace, the main characters recall how they met many years earlier through Annamaria.
Unable to look after the children, Arturo and Alessandro take them to Sicily: the beach of the Vergine Maria in Mondello (Palermo) is where the ferry arrives. The children’s grandmother lives in the 18th century Villa Valguarnera in Bagheria (PA), where the disturbing frescoes seen in the film’s opening shot presage the dramatic family secrets hidden behind the beautiful facade.
