The heart of the story is an apartment in via Cavalacanti 37 in the Monteverde Vecchio neighbourhood of Rome that Pietro (Elio Germano), an aspiring actor and Sicilian pastry chef, rents so that he can finally live on his own. However, he has to handle the mysterious and nosy co-residents who have no intentions of moving out. Right in front of the apartment, in via Giulio Barrili, is the Angelo del Caffè bar where the character makes friends with two nosy bartenders. The long-established pastry shop Andreotti where Pietro works and waits tables is in via Ostiense 54. Also in Monteverde is the residence (via Donna Olimpia 30) of a mysterious woman linked to the residents of the apartment in via Cavalacanti by a mystery. The finale offers a change of scene: the main characters travel down viale Trastevere on tram n.8 to Teatro Valle to end with a play, the same that they had begun decades earlier.
An audition takes Pietro to Cinecittà Studios where he bumps into a group of cardinals, an homage to Nanni Moretti’s film Habemus Papam (2011).
