Where it was filmed 'Fellini Satyricon'

The surreal and dreamlike journey of the two liberti, Encolpius (Martin Potter) and Ascyltus (Hiram Keller), with their many adventures and strange encounters was shot in Rome’s Cinecittà Studios, with several scenes shot on location in Ponza (LT) – the shipboard scene where Encolpius is captured and marries Lichas of Taranto which was shot on Chiaia di Luna beach – and the cliff of Punta di Capo Bianco where the Emperor attempts suicide before being finished off by the enemy.

The dunes of Focene, a hamlet in the municipality of Fiumicino, is the setting for the final scene where the friends of the dead poet Eumolpus (Salvo Randone) chew on his body, in accordance to his last wishes, while Encolpius joins other young men in search of new adventures.

Freely inspired by Petronius’ work, retold in hyperbolic tones by Federico Fellini. In decadent 1st century Rome, the liberti Encolpius and Ascyltus
battle for young Giton’s favour and set off on a journey which brings them into contact with a range of people: from the poet Eumolpus to wealthy Trimalchio, from Lichas the pirate to the Emperor, with slaves, prostitutes, aristocrats and oracles along the way.
