Nuovo Olimpo by Ferzan Özpetek is set in Rome and tells a love story that spans three decades and four different eras, starting at the end of the Seventies.
The film is inspired by a true story that directly concerned the director; for once, love is at the heart of the narrative is love, rather than a reflection on the effect of feelings on people. Two twenty-five year olds (Damiano Gavino and Andrea Di Luigi) meet by chance and fall madly in love, then lose each other. They are fated to search for the other for the next thirty years.
The narrative begins as a "romance", with a classic case of love at first sight, but over the course of the film, as love becomes impossible, thwarted by the events of history, it becomes a melodrama.
Rome is the backdrop to the story, in particular the Montesacro neighbourhood with piazza Sempione. Some of the most symbolic places of the capital are shown, including the Janiculum hill, which offers one of the most evocative views of what is, not by chance, called the "eternal city", and via dei Fori Imperiali, where the pair meet for first time.
