The Penitent, by Luca Barbareschi, addresses the themes of the influence of the press and the exploitation of the law, grafted onto the personal terrain of spirituality and family relationships.
Written by playwright David Mamet (Pulitzer Prize winner for Glengarry Glen Ross), Barbareschi's first American film is inspired by the Tarasoff case, when a psychoanalyst became the victim of judicial harassment and targeted media defamation.
Produced by Èliseo Entertainment with Rai Cinema, the film’s international cast includes Catherine McCormack, Luca Barbareschi, Adam James and Adrian Lester.
The New York setting is evident from the exteriors, while the interiors can be traced back to Rome, where an upper-class New York apartment set was built. The club was shot in a prestigious villa in the EUR neighbourhood.

New York. A psychiatrist’s career and personal life is derailed when he refuses to testify on behalf of a violent and unstable former patient who has caused the deaths of several people. An explosive chain reaction is triggered by the mix of elements: the young patient's LGBTQ+ identity, the doctor's Jewishness, media hunger for news and a severe legal judgment, aggravated by a newspaper printing error. The media glare and the ferocity of the judicial system add to the man’s moral dilemma as he shields behind the Hippocratic oath to deflect the questions, pressures and betrayals from everyone searching for the truth.
