L'orto americano, a gothic horror by Pupi Avati, is set in Bologna in the 1940s and tells the story of a mentally troubled young man with literary aspirations who falls madly in love with an American army nurse. This prompts his move, the following year, to the American Midwest where he will live in a house next door to the building occupied by the nurse’s elderly mother. The houses, however, are separated by a macabre vegetable garden, which emanates mysterious screams at night. The woman is desperate for news of her daughter who has disappeared. At the end of the war, she had written to tell her mother that she was going to marry an Italian. The young man begins a tense search for the nurse, which leads him into a particularly dramatic situation, and a completely unexpected conclusion in Italy.
The seven-week shoot took place in and around Rome, Cinecittà Studios, the Po delta and the city of Davenport in Iowa. Locations also included a single day’s shoot at Villa Torlonia in San Mauro Pascoli (Forli Cesena), on Tuesday 19 December 2023: the location was chosen by the director to recreate the central square of the town where the story is set. The inner courtyard became an enormous set, hosting crew, actors and director becoming a large film set. This was made possible by the collaboration with Emilia-Romagna Film Commission with whom the Municipality of San Mauro Pascoli has signed an agreement for the promotion and development of film productions in the area.
