Familia, Francesco Costabile's second work, is a dark melodrama, mingling a range of styles typical of genre cinema: psychological thriller, horror and social themes. The contamination encapsulates the desire to experiment, drawing the viewer in and exploring the story in depth, making it universal.
Based on the true story told in the book Non sarà sempre così, the film recounts the life of twenty-year-old Luigi Celeste, who lives with his mother and brother with whom he has a deep bond. Franco, the partner and father who coloured Licia’s youth and the boys’ childhood with fear and abuse, returns after an absence of 10 years to claim his family. The film was shot in Rome: locations included the Tufello neighbourhood.

Twenty-year old Luigi Celeste lives with his mother Licia and his brother Alessandro; the three are united by a deep bond. It's been almost ten years since any of them have seen Franco, the partner and father who coloured Licia’s youth and the boys’ childhood with fear and abuse. Luigi hangs out on the streets and, searching for a sense of belonging and identity, joins a far-right group which fills him with even more anger and oppression. One day Franco returns to claim his children and his family, but he still poisons everything he touches and imprisons those he loves in his shadow. Luigi and his family touch rock-bottom before they can complete a path of rebirth, whatever the cost.
