Wherever the gaze is, women always point at the sky, up high, towards what cannot be seen... what we feel. We are connected to the stars, that's why we feel everything.
Diamanti is the 15th film directed by Ferzan Özpetek, a female-oriented story that counts 18 Italian actresses among its protagonists.
Shot entirely in Rome, the film is set in both the present (the scenes where the director summons his favourite actresses to propose his new film) and the Seventies, where the actresses are catapulted into a film and theatre costumers’ workshop.
The business, run by sisters Alberta and Gabriella Canova (Luisa Ranieri and Jasmine Trinca), who are as different from each other as they are connected to the other, is the setting for the life events, love and family stories of a group of women who contribute, each in her own way, to its success and prestige.
Diamanti is a tribute to the profession of the costume designer. "Ferzan wanted me to come on board during the writing phase and so I was able to tell the screenwriters Carlotta Corradi and Elisa Casseri, about anecdotes, tics, superstitions, and, above all, imagine what this dress that the women work on laboriously throughout the film would be like, all its phases and iterations, like a great collective architectural work that will finally unite them in perfect harmony” explained costume designer Stefano Ciammitti. “Sartoria Tirelli Trappetti welcomed us into their archives: photographs, textiles, endless dresses; above all they welcomed the actresses who wanted to know and learn directly from the gestures and words of the seamstresses who work tirelessly and with infinite passion every day. We were able to document the making of the red dress - which required more than 160 meters of fabric, all lined with black crinoline - before putting it on stage”.

A director summons his favourite actresses, those he has worked with and those he has loved. He wants to make a film about women but does not reveal much: he observes them, takes inspiration, reflects, until his imagination catapults them into another era, into a past where the noise of sewing machines fills a workplace managed and populated by women, where men have marginal roles and films are told from another point of view: costumes. Reality and fiction intertwine amidst solitude, passions, anxieties, heart-breaking shortcomings and indissoluble bonds, as do the lives of the actresses with those of the characters, competition with the sisterhood, the visible against the invisible.
