Alone, angry and looking for answers, a young German girl decides to travel to the Riviera Romagnola to meet the biological father she has never known. Their first meeting is a whirlwind of emotions, unanswered questions, a desire to belong and the tensions accumulated over time.
Alissa Jung's first work, Paternal Leave, is a drama filmed in Italy, set on a deserted beach on the Riviera Romagnola. It takes advantage of the winter atmosphere of the coast to tell the story in a beachfront kiosk that has closed for the cold season.
The production filmed in various locations in the province of Ravenna, including the Po Delta Park, Ravenna, Marina Romea, Casalborsetti and Cervia. Scenes were also filmed in the province of Ferrara, in the cities of Comacchio and Argenta.
Cesena also provided locations: the area near the train station and corso Cavour, with some scenes set at the Spinosi bakery.
The film, a minority Italian co-production with Germany, stars Luca Marinelli as an absent father, and was presented in the "Generation 14plus" section of the 75th Berlinale.
