"Happiness is like a train without a schedule: one comes by every now and then.
You can't predict its arrival, nor know when it will leave.
Your job is to go to the station."
(Paolo Crepet)
Arrivederci tristezza is a dramatic comedy directed by Giovanni Virgilio and set in Acireale (province of Catania), in the villages of Santa Tecla, Santa Maria la Scala, and Pozzillo.
Recognisable locations include the Margherita multiplex cinema, where the central character Aldo (Alessio Vassallo) thinks he sees his ex, Alessia; piazza Duomo, which overlooks the 15th century Cathedral of Maria Santissima Annunziata; the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul (dating to the 16/17th centuries); and the 18th-century Town Hall which can be seen during Aldo's bicycle rides or runs.
A striking location that appears several times during his training sessions is the terrace of the public park, also known as Villa Belvedere, named for the magnificent sea view it offers.
The Hermitage of Sant'Anna in Acicatena offers a spectacular scenic viewpoint over the Ionian coast and the small villages below.
The story provides a male perspective on the end of a relationship and portrays the transitional phase experienced by a man in his forties (Alessio Vassallo) when he is ghosted by his girlfriend and must start over. With the help of his psychotherapist (Nino Frassica) and a close friend (Selene Caramazza), he comes to realize that life can begin again.
