The story of Michela Andreozzi’s Unicorni unfolds in familiar settings for families with children—school, home, the park—and explores the challenges of parenting today. The title draws on the mythological figure of the unicorn to describe the story of a family grappling with diversity in its own unit, and, like many others, navigating doubts, fears, and unconscious prejudice.
The film is set in Rome. Locations include lungotevere and the Monteverde neighbourhood, a familiar setting for the director and screenwriter. There's a special location where the film's most touching scenes unfold, where the emotions—fear, love, anger, hope—of this very delicate story are most powerfully expressed: the place where the "Unicorn Parents" meet, a location that Andreozzi chose with particular care. "I wanted to film in a place in the midst of nature," she explained. "I thought this would create a more comfortable environment, especially for the children involved. We looked for a location outside Rome, in La Storta on the outskirts, where there are several farmhouses, and found this very special one, which happens to be next to a private residence. The building is used for events and as a dance hall, it was probably once a washhouse: it has that shape, and there are even cobblestones inside, at the entrance to the house".

Lucio, host of a popular radio show, is self-assured, brilliant, and open-minded. He is married to the beautiful Elena, who is insecure and emotionally dependent on her husband. They have a harmonious extended family (which comprises Lucio's first wife and daughter) and a son: 9-year-old Blu, who loves to dress up as a girl and is free to do so, with his parents' permission, at home. However, Blu really wants to dress as the Little Mermaid for the school play. His parents, torn between the desire to please him and the desire to protect him, will have to consider their open-mindedness and embark on a journey of awareness and acceptance, accompanied by a varied group of "Unicorn Parents", guided by a welcoming psychologist.
