The series focusses on the origins of the "Tiger of Malaysia". It shows the birth of the legend of Sandokan, his discovery that he was the son of an ancient warrior king, his love for Marianna, friendship with Yanez and rivalry with Lord Brooke.
Filming took place in Lazio, Tuscany, Calabria and on the island of Reunion.
Shooting on Sandokan began on April 22, 2024 in Formello, where the series inaugurated the new Theatre 7, in the Lux Vide production centre. Three ships were created, Sandokan’s in particular, at the centre of a 300 square meter 360° wraparound LED wall; scenes were also put together with the help of augmented reality integrated with real actors and objects, while the sea was generated in the studio and integrated with aerial shots taken in Calabria and Thailand.
Locations in Lazio included Albano Laziale, in the Castelli Romani area, near the Roman-era cisterns; and the Tivoli countryside near the San Polo crossroads. Here, just kilometres from the city centre, the Laghi dei Reali park, a natural oasis of about ten hectares with two artificial lakes, provided the Chia waterfalls, which served as the jungle (Pasolini filmed the baptism scene in The Gospel According to Matthew here).
In May 2024, the cast and crew of Sandokan shot in Sammezzano Castle and park in Leccio, municipality of Reggello, 30 km from Florence. The rooms of the castle, a rare example of Moorish architecture now in a state of abandonment, were previously used by Matteo Garrone in 2015 for one of the three epics in his Tale of Tales starring Salma Hayek.
In Calabria, shooting took place at Le Castella on Isola Capo Rizzuto on the Ionian coast, where scenic needs required the construction of a pier. The shoot there ended in late August 2024 after 16 weeks of work. Le Castella was previously used by Mario Monicelli to stage the fiefdom of Aurocastro, Puglia, in the unforgettable L'armata Brancaleone (1966).
Locations also included the Tyrrhenian Sea; the beaches of the renowned tourist resort of Tropea and nearby Capo Vaticano; the Costa degli Dei, where Sandokan (Can Yaman) crosses the bay of Grotticelle on horseback; Vibo Marina - the localities of Timpa Janca and the Fiume dock at the harbour; the beach of Lamezia Terme; and the seafront adjacent to the La Vota lakes of Gizzeria.
In the industrial area of Lamezia Terme, a backlot was built for the English colony of Labuan.
