Directed by Victoria Mahoney, The Old Guard 2 is the adrenaline-fueled sequel to the Netflix film The Old Guard, based on the world created by Greg Rucka and illustrator Leandro Fernandez.
A dark-haired Charlize Theron plays Andromache of Scythia, the leader of a group of clandestine immortal mercenaries fighting to protect the mortal world. The cast includes Luca Marinelli and Uma Thurman.
Some principal photography took place in Italy in 2022. The crew filmed in central Rome and on the Roman coastline in the old port of Fiumicino (via del Faro); there filming took place near the scaffolding towers, the ruins of the signalling building, and the stretch of sea around the mouth of the Tiber. The entire area was transformed into a war set. The Perugini family's "tree house" in via Marina di Campo, Fregene, served as a location for a forest on stilts.
A second wave of filming took place in Trieste. The crew stayed in the city in July 2022, filming primarily on molo Audace and the Maritime station; via Foschiatti was transformed into a Parisian street, a demonstration of the city's versatility. The production involved over 500 people, including more than 50 local technicians and workers, and approximately 300 extras.
Some scenes feature lake Iseo as a backdrop, in particular a stretch of coastal road known as the Western Sebina, the location of the "Castro Ravine", where imposing rocks plunge sheer into the water. Locations also included Lovere, Riva di Solto, Predore, and Tavernola.
