Oscar-winning director Paolo Sorrentino returns to Turin after Il Divo with a story starring Toni Servillo and Anna Ferzetti as Mariano De Santis, lawyer and President of Italy, and his daughter Dorotea, also a lawyer and her father’s advisor and assistant.
La grazia is a film about love, which the director defines as an "inexhaustible engine that generates doubt, jealousy, tenderness, emotion, understanding of life, and responsibility. This is love and its complex ramifications seen and experienced through the eyes of Mariano De Santis, a plausible yet rigorously fictional President of the Republic."
Filming on Paolo Sorrentino's La grazia, which opened the 82nd Venice Film Festival, began in Turin in March 2025 with the support of the Film Commission Torino Piemonte. Locations included several iconic places in the Piedmont capital, some also serving as the interiors of the Quirinale Palace (the Presidential residence in Rome): Castello del Valentino, Moncalieri Castle, Palazzo Chiablese di Torino, the Turin Academy of Sciences, the Egyptian Museum, the Tesoriera bowling alley. In Lorusso & Cutugno Prison, the President meets an inmate hoping for a pardon.
Locations in Rome included various spots of piazza del Quirinale, home to the eponymous Presidential residence; via Condotti, where the President takes his first stroll at the end of his term; piazza di Spagna; and Villa Medici, home of the French Academy.
Sorrentino also filmed at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan and in a chapel in Modena.
Filming wrapped in early May 2025.

Mariano De Santis is the President of Italy. He is Catholic, a widower, whose daughter, Dorotea, is also a lawyer. In the tedious days towards the end of his term of office, final tasks come to the fore: he must ponder delicate requests for clemency. These genuine moral dilemmas seem inextricably intertwined with his private life. While riven by doubt, he must make a decision, and, driven by his innate sense of responsibility, this great President of the Italian Republic does just that.
