The only Italian film in competition at the 2025 Venice Days at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival, La Gioia by Nicolangelo Gelormini, stars Valeria Golino, Saul Nanni, Jasmine Trinca, and Francesco Colella. The film, shot in November and December 2024 in Turin and Rome, is based on the play Se non sporca il mio pavimento by Gioia Salvatori and Giuliano Scarpinato, who wrote the screenplay with Benedetta Mori, in collaboration with Chiara Tripaldi and Nicolangelo Gelormini. The film is loosely based on a tragic, brutal true story: the murder of Gloria Rosboch, a teacher from Castellammonte, at the hands of her 22-year-old former student, Gabriele Defilippi.
The story is set in Turin and the surrounding province, where filming took place for a couple of weeks with the support of the Film Commission Torino Piemonte and the contribution of the Piemonte Film TV Fund. Locations in Turin included: piazza IV Marzo, piazza Vittorio Veneto, and historic Caffè Elena in the porticoes.
The former FIAT factory - the Lingotto - was a particular inspiration for the director: "I was very keen, right from the start, to film at the Lingotto. It was a true passion of mine as an architect; it's a place rarely seen in films, and that really attracted me", The building now houses an art gallery, and while location scouting, Gelormini came across Julius von Bismarck's work The Expressions of Thetis, a buoy suspended in the air that floats at the centre of the iconic spiral ramp. Clearly visible, the work plays a highly symbolic role in the film's finale: "That buoy became Gioia. It's a completely personal thing, but the moment I saw that work, I understood that the film's concept had found its form".
Scenes were also shot in Fregene and Rome, standing in for Piedmont. "The locations where we filmed La Gioia are also a transfiguration of reality. It is not just an evocative title, it’s also a way to transfigure reality". commented the director.

Gioia is a high school teacher who has never known love, except for the oppressive love of her parents, with whom she still lives. Her students include Alessio, who uses his body to make some money to help out his mother, a supermarket cashier. A forbidden relationship develops between Alessio and Gioia, one that is both fragile and inexplicably necessary for both. However, Alessio's desire for social and human redemption is a silent poison and proves to be an obstacle that stops him being completely won over by Gioia's disarming sweetness. He destroys everything, including the only person who has ever loved him.
