Squali, presented at Alice nella Città in Panorama Italia, marks the directorial debut of Daniele Barbiero. Loosely based on the novel Gli squali by Giacomo Mazzariol (“Mio fratello rincorre i dinosauri”, adapted for the screen by Stefano Cipani), the story addresses the universal conflict between the carefree nature of adolescence and the stresses of adulthood; it is set in the society of today, with its relentless pace that forces constant movement, pressures to follow pre-established paths, and make choices.
The film is a co-production between Italy, Spain, and Poland, produced by Camaleo Film, Eagle Pictures, Neo Art Producciones, and Agresywna Banda, and stars James Franco, Lorenzo Zurzolo, Francesco Centorame, Ginevra Francesconi, Francesco Gheghi.
The film tells the story of nineteen-year-old Max (Zurzolo), who, having just finished school, is about to leave with his friends on a trip to Spain. These plans are upended when he is contacted by Robert Price (James Franco), a start-up entrepreneur interested in developing the app he created to help his peers choose university courses.
Accepting Price's offer means that Max has to leave the Veneto countryside and move to the capital, where a competitive environment awaits, one that forces him to face his fears, uncertainty, and desire to keep pace with a world that seems to move too quickly.
The reassuring landscape of his previous life, the time spent with friends and the carefree nature of that age, is contrasted with the cold, dark environments where he ends up living and working, clearly defining the phases of life: the transition from adolescence to the responsibilities of adult life.
The locations of Squali have two souls: the province of Rovigo - in particular the area of Porto Tolle, home to the Pila fishing cooperative; the hamlet of Selva di Crespino, where Max's father has his workshop; and Villamarzana; and the city of Rome. Locations in the capital include Campus X, in Tor Vergata, for the outdoor spaces of the large company that Max joins; the Shangri-La Roma hotel in viale Algeria; Tiburtina station, when he arrives in the city; and the Colosseum and Imperial Forums, where he relaxes. Tor Cervara, in the countryside outside Rome, provides the lake where Max fishes and talks with his father.
