The film reunites the original cast with director David Frankel and screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna, while introducing a host of new characters, played by Kenneth Branagh, Simone Ashley, Justin Theroux, Lucy Liu, Patrick Brammall, Caleb Hearon, Helen J. Shen, Pauline Chalamet, B.J. Novak, and Conrad Ricamora. Tracie Thoms and Tibor Feldman reprise their roles as Lily and Irv from the first film.
Nearly twenty years after the first film, the main characters return to the elegant streets of New York City and the luxurious offices of Runway, and travel to Italy where Milan hosted 10 days filming in October 2025.
Naturally, shooting locations included the "Fashion Quadrilateral" of the Brera district, specifically Via Montenapoleone, which was used for nocturnal scenes along with Piazza della Scala. Also located in the "Quadrilatero" is Palazzo Parigi, Corso di Porta Nuova, a historic building that hosts an exclusive luxury hotel used for scenes in the lobby and entrance of the protagonists' hotel.
The nearby Brera Academy hosted the Runway fashion show, whose catwalk was built by a local company specialising in fashion shows.
The scenes set in the Museo del Cenacolo Vinciano, home to Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper, were shot on a soundstage to avoid damaging the original wall painting with film lighting. A team of Italian set designers recreated the frescoed room at approximately three-quarters the original size.
Key filming locations included Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II for shopping scenes, and iconic Piazza Duomo, captured from above by drones.
Other locations included: Istituto Lombardo - Academy of Sciences and Letters on Via Borgonuovo; Via Filodrammatici; the Ottagono; Villa Arconati; the courtyard of the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie; and Palazzo Clerici.
Outside Milan, scenes were filmed at Villa del Balbiano on lake Como as the villa rented by Benji Barnes (Justin Theroux) which was adapted to feature a lawn and garden statues.
