Set in the frigid landscape of Antarctica, Antartica - Quasi una fiaba, Lucia Calamaro's debut feature unfolds entirely inside the research base that hosts a group of scientists studying human survival in the ice. The base comprises study areas, laboratories, storage warehouses, and convivial spaces for dining, reading, playing, sports, and relaxing.
The set was created in a bunker inside Mount Soratte. Numerous tunnels were built inside the mountain in 1937, to serve as air-raid shelters for high-ranking Italian Army officials given its proximity to Rome. Between 1967 to 1972, during the Cold War, some of these tunnels were converted to house a nuclear bunker for the Italian Government. The crew filmed for four weeks indoors, without sunlight; the windows seen in the film are fake.
The exterior scenes showing the base in its entirety from the outside were created using special effects.

Isolated for eight months of the year, a small community of scientists explore the future of the human species as they look for things that humanity doesn’t yet understand or know, both above and below ground. The arrival of stubborn genius Maria Medri at the most isolated base in Antarctica undermines the plans of her mentor, Fulvio Cadorna, the mission leader. Fulvio and Maria are similar, they are also close, complicit. But as so often happens, everyone wants the same thing until the day comes when everyone wants their own. A scientific, ideological, and emotional conflict.
