The Dog Stars is based on Peter Heller's 2012 post-apocalyptic novel set in Colorado. Ridley Scott has adapted it into an epic and gripping thriller set in a world where survival is instinctive, but humanity is a choice. It stars Australian Jacob Elordi as Hig, a widowed pilot who has built an efficient but isolated home in a brutal post-apocalyptic landscape with Bangley, a military survival expert. A mysterious radio transmission prompts Hig to venture into the unknown in search of hope and the humanity he still believes in.
Scott filmed in several Italian locations, in Friuli, Veneto, Abruzzo, and Rome. These locations, mostly landscape, were chosen after extensive scouting by the director in the weeks preceding the start of production. With a crew of 400+ Italian and 100+ international professionals, shooting took a total of nine weeks (April - June 2025).
Filming began in Friuli (29 April 2025) on the shores of lake Bordano, just kilometres from the border with Veneto, where the director headed with the crew from 12 - 16 May. Scott chose locations in the Cansiglio plateau of the Belluno Prealps: Polcenigo, the Cansiglio forest, Vallorch, the Cimbrian villages, Le Rotte and La Genzianella.
The production then moved to the mountains of Abruzzo: the Sirente Velino park, in particular the areas around Secinaro and Ovindoli, and the Parchi dell'Aquila airport in Preturo.
Some scenes were shot in Rome, at Cinecittà Studios, which also served as the base camp for the production, and in EUR, between via Cristoforo Colombo, viale della Civiltà del Lavoro, viale dell'Arte and via della Pittura, where a post-apocalyptic scenario sees a burning helicopter crash into buildings, setting buses and vegetation alight.
The film was written by Mark L. Smith and produced by Ridley Scott, Michael Pruss, Mark L. Smith, and Cliff Roberts with an estimated budget of €100 million.
