Santa Severina (province of Crotone) stands on a spur of tuff rock overlooking the Neto river valley roughly 326m above sea level. The baptistry, the ancient Co-cathedral of St. Anastasia and the Church of St. Philomena date to the Byzantine era, period of the town’s greatest expansion. The Grecia neighbourhood in the eastern part, with a view over the territory of the marquisate, provides further demonstration of the Byzantine domination, its urban structure conserved intact. The adjacent neighbourhood of Iudea was historically populated by Jews until their expulsion in 1510.
The imposing Norman castle, rebuilt over the centuries, is a complex military structure with a 15th century square keep, four corner turrets and four protruding bastions. Protected by a moat and a wall with merlons, the building has dense underground labyrinths, stables with the remains of medieval frescoes and reception rooms with plasterwork and Baroque paintings by Francesco Giordano. A belvedere, commissioned in 1535 by Galeotto Carafa, provides a view of the surrounding territory up to Crotone and the Ionian sea.
