An ancient village in Lazio once known as Aletrium, Alatri (FR) was a stronghold of the Hernici and one of the so-called Saturn cities of the Ciociaria whose foundation legends are linked to the God Saturn. The historical centre of Alatri, divided into nine sections, develops within the city walls and reproduces the urban layout of the Roman era extending across the area of the acropolis, encased by megalithic polygonal walls. Interesting monuments include: the 12th century Collegiata di Santa Maria Maggiore built by workers from Burgundy; the Co-cathedral of St. Paul, built in the 10th century and modified many times up to the 19th century, with the adjacent Palazzo Gottifredo, the temporal and spiritual power of Alatri in 13th century; the medieval churches of St. Francis and St. Sylvester: the 5th century proto-monastery of St. Sebastian founded by Liberio, Prefect of the Gauls under Emperor Theodoric the Great. More recent buildings include monumental 19th century fountains and the Palazzo Conti-Gentili whose 12th century foundation is belied by a mostly 18th century appearance today and has a large 19th century sundial on the facade.
