Located in the north of Rome between the Foro Italico sports complex and the Trionfale and Camilluccia neighbourhoods, the Monte Mario Nature Reserve covers an area of 204 hectares and takes its name from Monte Mario which, at 139m, is the most imposing of the hills in the “Monti della Farnesina” range.
The Park is a priceless resource, both environmentally – given the numerous species of flora and fauna – and culturally – with several historical villas located in the protected area. On the environmental front, the lower slopes have typically Mediterranean vegetation, while submontane features can be found further up the park.
The area has been settled since prehistory, with numerous residential and noble villas here in Roman times and from the Renaissance onwards. The park area includes: Villa Mazzanti, built in the second half of 19th century and headquarters of the Ente Regionale Roma Natura since 1998; Villa Madama (1518) today an official reception location for the Prime Minister and the Foreign Ministry; the neoclassical Villa Miani (1837) and Villa Mellini, which houses the Astronomical Observatory of Rome and is a rare example of a 15th century villa in Rome.
