There have been industrial plants, both mechanical and chemical, on the vast plain that stretches between the city of Termini (PA) and the archaeological area of the ancient site of Himera since the 1950s. The Enel power station was the first, followed by Fiat factories and several chemical manufacturers, and all brought significant flows of income to the area. There is a wealth of industrial archaeology with numerous warehouses in obvious and advanced states of degradation due to decades of abandonment.
