Description

The ruins of the cyclopean masonry walls in the area of Castellone indicate that the origins of Falvaterra (FR) date to pre-Roman times. However, Fabrateria nova was founded by the Romans in 125 BCE, after the destruction of the nearby Fregallae, on the right bank of the Liri River, down from the confluence with the River Sacco. Juvenal celebrated Falvaterra as the ideal place for otium (leisure) because of its peaceful nature and surrounding natural beauty, much of which is now part of the Monumento naturale regionale delle Grotte di Falvaterra e Rio Obaco.

First destroyed by the Longobards during invasions in the 6th and 7th century, the city was again flattened during the Renaissance by Pope Julius II (1503-1513). The property then passed to the Colonna family who kept it until 1870. For this reason, the 13th century medieval castle (of which little remains) bears the family’s name.
