Borgo fluviale di Pontemanco, Carrara San Giorgio, Province of Padua, Italy

Description

Pontemanco is a small village of medieval origins in the municipality of Due Carrare, at the foot of the eastern slope of the Euganean Hills. It is perhaps the only intact example of a 16th-18th century town centre in the Paduan area, preserving its urban layout and almost all of the buildings.
Its name seems to derive from an initial lack (mancanza) of a bridge (ponte) over the Biancolino canal, which still flows through it today. Symmetrical residential centres have developed on the opposite banks of the canal; one clustered around 18th century Villa Lovato Sperandio and the other around Villa Grimani Fortini with its small 17thcentury Oratory della Santissima Annunciata which houses frescoes, decorations, works of art and original furnishings from the late 17th century.
Pontemanco is still known as "the ancient village of mills" because of its very early milling activity which ended in 1970 after a fire in the mill on the left bank. The symbol of the village is its ancient mill which probably dates to the 14th century.
