The panoramic coastal road into Trieste leads straight to the rione Barcola.
In Roman times, this thin strip of land overlooking the sea, but sheltered from the Bora wind, was filled with villas, as evidenced by the remains of Villa Giulia which can now be visited inside the Tergestino lapidary in the Castle of San Giusto. Noble residences were built in the mid 1800s, especially on viale Miramare where many can still be seen, including the Jakic house, better known to locals as the "onion house".
The most eye-catching element to Barcola is the number of bathers crowding the seafront. Each section has a name: from the Miramare crossroads to the Marinella, California, pier G, Topolini (ear-shaped platforms) and the Pineta. During the winter months, the seafront is a good place for long, picturesque walks and wonderful sunsets.
