Description

The ruins of the Church of St. Martin, on the coastal promontory of Stalettì (province of Catanzaro), in the hamlet of Copanello, offer remarkable archaeological information. The ancient, single-naved place of worship, ended in a triple apse which may previously have been part of a thermal bath complex or mausoleum.
Built on land belonging to Cassiodorus, prefect to Theodoric the Great, the church is considered part of the Vivariense Monastery he founded in 550 C.E. The Vivariense Monastery is generally considered the first Christian University in the West.
All around, the numerous hermit settlements carved out of the rock, make the Stalettì promontory a significant and ancient place of worship in the late Middle Ages in Calabria.
