Chianalea, the “Venice of the South”, is the oldest part of the popular tourist destination of Scilla (province of Reggio Calabria), characterised by a thousand years of history and its position beside the sea. The village’s houses are actually built directly on the rocks, separated by small alleyways that lead down to the water.
The three-storey Palazzo Scategna, with a double order of stone balconies, and eclectic Villa Zagari submit to the force of the waves on Scaro Alaggio, the dock used by fishing boats. The alleys of Chianalea lead to ancient fountains and places of worship, including the 18th century Church of Santa Maria di Portosalvo, and up to the peak where Castle Ruffo stands in a defensive position, transformed into a residence in the 1500s by Count Paolo Ruffo. The castle offers a panoramic view that includes the Aeolian islands and the coast of Sicily.
