Disused Orte-Civitavecchia Railway

Orte, VT, Italia

Description

The Orte-Civitavecchia train line was built between 1894 and 1926. The Orte-Capranica section, disused since 1994, is still equipped and efficient. The section from Capranica to Fabrica serves as a link to the national rail system and the Rome-Viterbo regional line. The buildings in the disused train stations are generally in good condition and some are inhabited. The Capranica-Civitavecchia section, whose last active stretch – between Blera and Capranica – was closed in 1963 (after a landslide near the Cencelle tunnel in 1961 prompted the closure of the rest of the line), however, is derelict with track present only in the last 10km leading to Civitavecchia, where about 8km is used as a cargo siding to stock cars. The buildings are in precarious conditions, some decrepit.

Since 1986, this stretch has been the focus of many overhaul projects, started and never completed, that have refurbished the train station, the bridges and tunnels. Consequently, the entire stretch of railway can be seen today, although only certain sections can be travelled as sections are blocked by gates and landslides, e.g. the closure of the entrance into Casalone tunnel from Civitavecchia and the abundant vegetation that has grown up in various places between Mole del Mignone and Civitavecchia.
