The city of Bolzano was dominated by two dictatorships in the 20th century: first the Fascist regime from 1922 to 1943, then two years of Nazi occupation. Both dictatorships left their marks on society here, most obviously on the architecture of the city. During the Fascist regime, various buildings were constructed to provide the idea of the “New Great Bolzano” including the monument to Victory, a bas relief of Mussolini on horseback in piazza Tribunale and the monumental building of the Corpo d'Armata in piazza IV Novembre.
The city works also included corso della Libertà. Previously known as corso Littorio, it was given the name corso 9 Maggio following the conquest of Abyssinia (Ethiopia) in 1936. Made accessible to vehicle traffic in 1938, it became an important link between the historical centre and the neighbourhood of Gries. With perfectly linear and geometric porticos, much taller and wider than those of the Middle Ages, the Corso represents a Fascist ideal that appropriates and rationalizes the architectural characteristics of Bolzano.
