Golfo dei Poeti

La Spezia, SP, Italia

Description

The Golfo dei Poeti (The Poets’ Gulf) is the last stretch of the Ligurian Riviera di Levante (Coast of the Rising Sun). Coinciding with the Gulf of la Spezia, it was given this name because of the interest and admiration expressed by many writers and poets including Byron, Shelley, Petrarch and Montale.

The Gulf is unique for the colours of its houses, the beauty of the coastline and its natural bays, the important architectural and cultural heritage of La Spezia, with its art deco buildings and the medieval Castle of St. George, and the seaside villages of Porto Venere and Lerici.

Porto Venere and the adjacent island archipelago of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Promontorio delle Bocche, where the Gothic Church of St. Peter stands and an inlet dedicated to Byron, offers breath-taking views over the gulf. Lerici is set in a natural bay on the sea and was much loved for its tranquillity by Mary and Percy Shelley.
