Description

The Calatrava bridge, also known as the bridge of San Francesco di Paola, links the old city nucleus with the newer part of Cosenza. Designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava as part of an urban regeneration plan, it was inaugurated on 26 January 2018 and links the south eastern outskirts of the city to the centre.

Supported by a huge 800-ton pylon, it is 104m high, 24m wide, and the tallest cable-stayed bridge in Europe. A 100m high pylon, on a 52° incline, is the starting point for all the cables with give the bridge the look of giant a harp as intended by the architect. There are four transport lanes (two per direction) and a pedestrian footpath with a view over the historical centre at the halfway point.
