Cathedral of St. Lawrence– Genoa

Cattedrale di San Lorenzo, Piazza San Lorenzo, Genova, GE, Italia

Description

The Cathedral of St. Lawrence is the most important Catholic church in Genoa. The façade has Gothic portals made by French artisans in the 13th century and is flanked by two bell towers of differing heights. It stands out for its dominating white and black lines, a symbol of nobility for the Genoese, and the marble lions at the sides.
The central nave is lined with marble, mostly black and white, while the left nave houses the Chapel of St. John the Baptist, the city’s patron saint. The cathedral conserves the Sacro Catino (Sacred Bowl), believed to have been used at the Last Supper. The structure includes the Treasure Museum and Diocesan Museum. The cathedral also conserves the 381 mm shell, from a British battleship which pierced the cathedral wall on 9 February 1941.
