Description

The 25km route of the antique Trenino (little train) of Casella – which still functions today – leaves from piazza Manin, in the centre of Genoa. Its tracks follow the medieval walls of the city in Valbisagno, to Valpolcevera crossing valleys and woods to finally end in the Scrivia valley. In total it crosses 13 tunnels in the Ligurian Apennines and 9 historical centres in addition to the main terminuses.
The train line was inaugurated in 1929 and was immediately popular with the inhabitants of Genoa as it made travel to the hinterland very easy. Significant restoration work on the carriages and tracks took place in the 1960s and 1970s as the splendid original carriages attest.
The train line reaches 458 m altitude, a maximum speed of 30 km/h and in some points tackles slopes of 45 degrees.
Today the Genoa-Casella line is the most original and panoramic way to reach Sant’Olcese, Casella and other municipalities in the hinterland.
