Description

The Basilica of Sant’Elia, in Castel Sant’Elia (province of Viterbo), dates to the 11th century and was built above an area that had previously housed other religious buildings: an Etruscan sanctuary, a Benedictine coenobitic monastery and a cult area in the 8th and 9th centuries.
The basilica’s simple façade has suspended little arches in the upper part. There are three portals, one whose upper portion is decorated with two rams’ heads. The Romanesque interior of the Basilica has three naves divided by columns. The richly decorated walls feature three registers of frescoes, the remains of a Cosmatesque floor, an 11th century pulpit and a ciborium with Cosmatesque cross.
