Island of Dino

Isola di Dino, Italia

Description

The island of Dino is located on the north eastern Tyrrhenian coast on the riviera dei Cedri, facing the village of Praia a Mare. A mountain of rocks, it rises out of the sea reaching up to 100m in height, with a wild and natural appearance that conceals caverns and caves. Its name derives from dina, the Greek word for storm, a reflection of how strongly the waves beat onto the rock.
The only arrival point is a small dock which leads to a 1,700m long road which links the jetty to the upper part of the island where there is a tower, a stele dedicated to the Madonna della Grotta and the belvedere viewpoint.
The islet has 50 hectares of vegetation and notable natural attractions, in particular numerous caves: the Monk’s cave whose walls are emerald green; the Sardine Cave, filled with fish; the Frontone cave and the waterfall cave with stalactites, stalagmites and pink rock to the west, then the Azure cave with blue reflections, the Lion’s cave resembling a lion, and the Gargiulo cave, 18m beneath the surface of the sea.
