The old residence of the Counts of Tyrol, which houses the South Tyrolean Museum of History, is located in Castel Tirolo near Merano. The museum’s main exhibit is the castle itself. This consists of the south palace, with the castle’s annexed chapel; the east palace; and the west wing, which now houses the museum’s gift shop and a so-called “temple,” which is one of the oldest features of castle and was used to store the counts’ treasures and weapons during the Middle Ages. The castle also has a café and some rooms for temporary exhibitions. An interactive tour through the castle, which has undergone great changes throughout the centuries, illustrates the main themes of history, in terms of the local area, art, and society, as well as the daily life at Castle Tyrol during the Middle Ages.
