The Directorate General for Film (DGC) and the Directorate General for Contemporary Art and Architecture and Urban Peripheries (DGAAP) of the Italian Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism has launched the inaugural edition of the Cineperiferie project, an initiative set up to fund cultural projects that help to raise awareness of suburban Italian landscapes and promote their culture.

The programme invites us to think about suburban Italian landscapes, understood as territories and not necessarily places far from city centres, which are socially, economically or environmentally fragile, have little access to services and infrastructure, or are subject to physical degradation, marginalisation, social unrest, uncertainty and poverty. The aim is to understand and re-think the role of the suburbs, revealing their specific identity and potential. The suburbs are where communities live, meeting places which people should feel deeply attached to and not excluded from.

The call for applications provides two lines of funding. The first, which is aimed at non-profit public and private bodies, universities, foundations, and cultural and audiovisual committees and associations, is for the organisation of film festivals centering around the theme of ‘the suburbs’ in areas marked by economic and social marginalisation and involving local residents. The second, which is aimed at professional bodies in the film and audiovisual sector, is for the production of documentary shorts.

The DGAAP and DGC have set aside €200,000, with a maximum of €15,000 for each film festival project and €25,000 for the production of short films. Both types of funding will be granted for up to 80% of the total budget for each project.

To participate in the call for applications, you will need to register on the website http://www.doc.beniculturali.it/ by 12:00 on 18 May 2018.
